£109m funding for school refurbishment
Ten Welsh school refurbishment schemes are set to receive a share of £108.9 million of capital investment from the Welsh Assembly.
Up to 40 schools across the country are set to benefit from the funding, which will be used for new construction and refurbishment projects over the next three years.
Plumbers and electricians will be put to work on existing schools over 2009/10.
Education minister Jane Hutt explained that the funding would be used for both primary and secondary education projects.
She said: "This targeted investment will enable local authorities and colleges to replace sub-standard accommodation and to provide facilities more akin to the needs of the 21st century learner.
"A number of local authorities have also advised us of the positive impact upon the local economy by generating construction work for local firms."
It follows a £15 million funding pledge from Ms Hutt for specific use as part of the Newport schools redevelopment programme.
The boost was part of the Welsh Assembly's Strategic Capital Investment Fund.
