Cash-back scheme could see more eco-upgrades installed
Qualified tradespeople such as plumbers and electricians may soon be asked to install energy-efficiency measures in people's homes after the government planned a consultation on a new cash-back scheme.
As part of its plans to cut the UK's carbon emissions, the initiative means householders who generate their own electricity will be paid for their efforts.
Additionally, a "pay as you save" scheme will be piloted to fund green renovation work to existing properties, which will be funded using the savings made on energy bills.
Commenting on the announcement, managing director of British Eco Energy Andrew Moore said similar schemes have already been successful in Europe.
"If we can get a decent rate of money back for the energy produced ... it will prompt people to invest in the UK market rather than just thinking of it as a green thing to do," he added.
The Federation of Master Builders recently urged the government to implement a VAT cut to five per cent for all energy-efficiency upgrades carried out by qualified tradespeople.
