Charity issues electrical safety guide
A new guide from the Electrical Safety Council (ESC) gives advice to landlords as part of its campaign to improve safety in rented accommodation.
Phil Buckle, director general of the ESC, said landlords have a legal obligation to ensure their properties are correctly maintained.
"An inspection of the electrical installation by a registered electrician, known as a periodic inspection, checks for any lack of earthing or bonding and can identify potential dangers," he commented.
Other recommendations made in the guide include visual checks of wires, sockets and switches, advice on testing portable appliances and maintaining a working fire alarm and emergency lighting.
The ESC will also be targeting tenants in privately rented homes in an attempt to raise awareness of the need for electrical safety in rented accommodation.
Recently, the charity warned that households that have been affected by flood water must consider the damage that may have been caused to their sockets, wiring and appliances.
