Employment prospects harder during recession
Handymen without any skills will find it harder to secure employment during the recession, the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) has suggested.
During a recession, employers tend to be "choosy about who they take", warned research fellow at the institute Tom Usher.
Figures from the Office of National Statistics released on June 17th show that while the unemployment rate and claimant count has increased, the number of vacancies available has fallen.
There has also been a decline in the growth of average earnings.
Mr Usher explained that it is not clear whether it has reached the stage of applicants taking any job, whatever their skill level.
However, he added that the number of applicants for positions is likely to make it harder to secure a job.
Mr Usher said: "Our experience tells us that this is detrimental to the chances of those applicants with disadvantages in the labour market whether that be because of lower skills, it could be [very young] job applicants or older job applicants or anybody with any kind of disability."
