Keep tabs on energy use, small firms told
Electricians and other small businesses have been urged to keep tabs on exactly what their reducible costs are during the downturn.
Energy and waste costs can be a particular burden on small firms but can easily be cut during the recession, according to support service Business Link.
Recent research by uSwitch.com found that more than half of small to medium-sized firms intend to save money by cutting back on energy costs.
Nearly two-thirds (65 per cent) believe they can make savings by finding cheaper suppliers.
Erica Russell, sustainable business advisor at Business Link, explained that knowing what energy usage costs are "can have a big impact on the spend".
She said: "Not only are they cost cutting on things like energy and waste they are also beginning to think about how they use that in a positive way.
"Projects like the Olympics are starting to generate more interest in this green buying and businesses are seeing this as a good opportunity as well as a tough cost cutting measure."
