Plea for better green building incentives
Green refurbishments to Britain's homes are an "urgent priority", according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).
The FMB has called on the Treasury to provide fiscal incentives for the industry, such as plumbers and electricians, to make residential property across the UK more energy efficient.
Speaking at the launch of a new Greenpeace report demanding further investment in the green economy, director-general of the FMB Richard Diment expects better incentives to create a "more sustainable future for the UK".
He suggested that the Treasury offers a cut in VAT to five per cent which "would create the required demand for energy efficient improvements to our homes".
"Such a move would help the building industry when thousands of jobs are being lost; help householders to cut their energy bills," he explained.
His comments came ahead of the G20 World Summit, which takes place today (April 2nd) in London.
The Industry Committee of the European Parliament has called for all buildings constructed after 2018 to create their own energy on site.
