Those made redundant may wish to retrain
By Brian de Selby
People over 50 who are unemployed may wish to consider setting up their own business, such as re-training to strike out as a self-employed plumber or electrician, according to one organisation.
A new report from the TUC suggests that older people who are long-term unemployed are at a higher risk of staying that way unless they get the help they need to get back into work.
The study found that this is particularly the case with men, who become almost one-quarter less likely to get back into employment with every year they spend out of work.
Laurie South, chief executive of business advice service PRIME, said people over 50 are unlikely to get back into the labour market if they have been out of work for six months, suggesting that they may wish to consider retraining.
"You stand a one in ten chance, so what we do is help people start their own business. It's a much better solution," she commented.
