Hire professional help for DIY , older people advised
An expert is recommending that older people considering major improvements to their homes hire in a trained professional rather than undertaking the work themselves.
Research by SAGA has found that one in ten people over 50 have carried out major DIY tasks, with almost a third (31 per cent) of these suffering an injury as they did so, some requiring hospital treatment.
Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council, said that while smaller jobs such as painting and decorating may not be a problem, it is always safer to hire a tradesman if in doubt.
"If they are talking about major projects such as roofing, plumbing, electrical installations and so on, then really they should involve a professional," he added.
SAGA's research additionally found that one-quarter of people over 50 have never performed DIY work themselves, with a similar proportion happy to leave major tasks to the experts.
