Leave maintenance to the professionals
The rise of DIY could have serious consequences for peoples' home insurance and beyond, one supermarket insurance service warns.
With an estimated 30 million Brits carrying out DIY tasks over the last year, Sainsbury's Home Insurance is warning homeowners that some maintenance tasks are best left to qualified handymen.
Carrying out electrical work in high-risk areas such as kitchens and bathrooms may not only invalidate people's home insurance, but can also be highly dangerous.
"Whatever you do, make sure you use a registered electrician to carry out any major electrical works," said Joanne Mallon, manager of Sainsbury's Home Insurance.
The credit crunch is a likely culprit for the trend for more and more people to take maintenance tasks into their own hands, but experts have warned that this can often be a false economy.
Research from Wilkinson carried out earlier this month shows that an overwhelming nine in ten Brits don't rate their DIY skills highly and nearly a quarter end up having to call in the professionals to fix a botched job.
