£36m invested in flood protection
A new £36 million investment package is set to see handymen put to work improving flood defences.
The funding has been provided through a partnership between the Environment Agency, engineering firm Birse Civils and design consultants Halcrow and Black & Veatch.
Infrastructure will be improved under four flood schemes, protecting over 40,000 people.
Philip Winn, manager of the Humber Strategy, explained: "This package of work will provide improved protection from flooding to more than 40,000 people 20,000 in East Yorkshire and 20,000 in North Lincolnshire.
"By awarding a large contract in this way we plan to save money, and we expect to complete the individual schemes for substantially less than the budgets quoted."
A scheme in Swinefleet is the most expensive at £11.9 million, with work to improve flood protection for 9,400 homes, three sewage treatment plants and the M18 motorway.
Meanwhile, a £10.6 million project in Halton Marshes will improve protection for industry based at the port.
More than £150,000 has been invested by the Environment Agency to protect homes in East Yorkshire against flooding following the summer floods of 2007, including permanent pumps at Hedon Haven.
