Amateur renovations could invalidate home insurance
Undertaking what seems like a simple DIY task could invalidate a householder's home insurance if they do not use a qualified professional, it has been claimed.
Andrew Leech, chief executive of the National Home Improvement Council, said many people living in older-style houses might find that renovations uncover problems that could not be seen on the surface.
"If you were employing a person and he was a creditable person who belongs to a recognised organisation then he would have his own insurance and he would also be backed up by his association," he commented.
Tradespeople have also been trained to understand the structural integrity of a house, Mr Leech continued, while an amateur might find themselves removing parts such as lintels that could cause serious damage.
SAGA recently reported that one-quarter of people over 50 have employed a qualified tradesperson to carry out major improvements to their house.
