Asbestos awareness saves lives
Plumbers, electricians and other qualified tradesmen in the Humber region are being given a hand this month by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to build a safer working environment.
Between May 5th and May 29th, as part of the construction industry's Working Well Together campaign, the safety body will stage a number of training events among small businesses in South Yorkshire and the Humber region.
Asbestos awareness is the chief focus of the sessions, as research shows many people working in the trades are unaware of the risks of exposure.
"Plumbers, electricians, joiners, heating and ventilation engineers are often most at risk, particularly when they are carrying out refurbishment work," commented HSE inspector Medani Close.
The half-day sessions cost £10 per person, with training provided by a qualified asbestos specialist.
A building contractor in Somerset was recently fined for exposing its employees to the risk of asbestos during refurbishment work on a school there.
