Community centre calls in builders to go green
A massive refurbishment plan for a Blackburn community centre green is set to incorporate proposals to turn it into an environmental enterprise hub.
Roman Road community centre has received a government grant of almost £1 million for the makeover, which is set to create renovation and trades jobs in the area.
Ten social enterprises are in line to make use of the new facility and planning bosses hope it will attract more.
Councillor Michael Law-Riding said the refurbishment will provide the community with a focal point where local organisations and people alike can meet to get green ideas off the ground.
"Several long-established local organisations will be using the new-look centre, along with our regular groups and other users, ensuring the venue is a true community facility," he commented.
In yesterday's budget chancellor Alistair Darling pledged £1 billion towards encouraging energy efficiency and green schemes, such as retrofitting eco-refurbishment projects to help buildings lower their carbon emissions.
