Council launches handyman scheme for the elderly
Handymen in Surrey have been employed by a local authority to help elderly and disabled residents in the region.
Epsom & Ewell Borough Council has been awarded a £13,000 grant to provide a subsidised service to local residents through a list of council-approved tradesmen.
Residents on means-tested benefits can make use of the qualified plumbers, electricians and decorators are all on the list and the council will pay up to 50 per cent of the works required, up to the value of £150.
The aim of the service is to help local elderly residents to get small, minor jobs done and also improve health, safety and security.
It will be funded for the next two years and will complement existing schemes in operation by Age Concern and Surrey Social Care.
Tradesmen working for Epsom & Ewell Borough Council recently completed an upgrade to a well-used footpath connecting the high street with the town hall car park, which included repairs and replacement of picket fencing.
