Green refurbs can pay for themselves
There are renewed calls for the UK's tradespeople and refurbishment professionals to be helped to retrofit the country's homes for a greener future.
Paul King, chief executive of the Green Building Council, said 27 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK come from the energy we use to heat and light our homes.
He has urged the government to introduce a scheme that will kick-start a "refurbishment revolution", providing more jobs for the country's trained tradesmen while helping to meet its emissions targets.
Mr King's proposal, called Pay As You Save, would mean that the cost of installing energy efficiency measures would be funded through the future savings made on that household's energy bills.
"The trick is to structure the scheme so the householder, or tenant for that matter, starts saving money from day one, and always saves more each month than they pay back," he commented.
Recently the UK Green Building Council launched a training and education programme aimed at raising awareness and skills in the green refurbishment sector.
