Handyman service from Camden Council
Camden Council is set to launch a new handyman service for elderly and disabled people.
The handypersons will provide home improvements to those aged over 55 or on disability allowances.
Firms have been invited to show their interest in carrying out the contracted service, with planned work set to start from April 2010.
The service will be available to those in both rented and owned housing and will be funded by the council.
Councillor Chris Naylor, executive member for Homes and Housing Strategy, explained that the service will ensure vulnerable and elderly people stay safe and independent in their home.
He said: "They will be able to get help with home improvements such as walk-in showers, and a variety of jobs around the house such as minor plumbing jobs, replacing light bulbs and putting up shelves.
"For many people this service could provide the difference between independent living and moving into residential care."
The council recently shortlisted two strong bidders in the running to deliver the ambitious Building Schools for the Future programme.
