Handymen in demand as refurbs become more popular
Britain's qualified handymen may find their skills are more in demand after a refurb magazine reported a "cultural shift" towards people fixing up their properties.
Research by Nationwide has found that renovating a loft can add as much as 20 per cent onto the value of a property, while creating extra floor space can also improve the asking price when the time comes to sell.
Jason Orme, editor of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine, said people will "either move or improve", with the latter being a more attractive option in the current climate.
He commented: "There's a cultural shift towards 'make do and mend', rather than the consumable, 'chuck away' kind of society."
"That is no more evident than in the home and definitely people are looking to improve their homes."
Mr Orme added that an extra bedroom or converted loft, which homeowners might hire a qualified tradesperson to design, is likely to make a home stand out from the crowd.
