Handymen will be needed in North Tyneside
More work will be available to qualified tradesmen in North Tyneside after an agreement was reached between a construction firm and the local council.
The project to deliver repairs and maintenance to the region's 16,000 council homes and buildings took a step forward when North Tyneside council selected building and development company Kier as its preferred bidder for a partnership.
If Kier is successful, a joint venture company will be established to carry out an estimated £600 million worth of maintenance and refurbishment work over the next ten years.
Andrew Kerr, chief executive of North Tyneside council, said the decision has taken two years to reach.
"It is good for tenants who will benefit from an improved housing repairs service, good for council taxpayers by delivering improved value for money and good for the council and its employees," he added.
So far this year the council has invested a record £108 million in construction jobs and housing repairs in the borough.
