Home improvement conservation urged
Handymen need to have "more awareness" about preserving the character of properties they make improvements to, it has been claimed.
Assistant editor of the Homebuilding & Renovating magazine Melanie Griffiths explained that too many alterations are made "thoughtlessly".
Her comments follow research by AA Personal Loans, which indicated that more than half of homeowners looking to improve their property wanted to create a "nicer living environment".
Nearly two thirds (32 per cent) hoped that alterations would add value to a property.
Ms Griffiths warned that planning permission has not always served as the safeguard it is intended to be when restricting bad development in conservation areas.
She said: "There does need to be more awareness with regard to preserving the properties' character, as too many alterations have been thoughtlessly made.
"Every homeowner should pay just as much due care and attention to their property's maintenance and overall appearance."
