Home improvements growing in popularity
Homeowners are increasingly calling in the builders to add value to their properties, according to figures from one high street bank.
The average amount spent by homeowners on improvements over the last 12 months came to £5,300, research by Halifax has shown.
One in ten respondents will be hiring a qualified tradesperson to help them build an extension, a new conservatory or a loft conversion within the next year.
Stephen Noakes, commercial director at Lloyds Banking Group, said in the current climate many people are deciding to stay put rather than move.
"It is no surprise that we've seen an increase in people adding space to their property to make it more suitable for their current lifestyle," he added.
However, homeowners have been reminded to make sure they hire a professional to carry out major work, as figures from AA Insurance show one in ten DIY projects go wrong and can cost more money than they save.
