Home maintenance spending on the rise
Householders in the UK will spend £16.6 billion on fixing up their homes this year, research has found.
Figures from Lloyds TSB show that spending on home improvements, both through tradesmen and DIY, has risen by £2.5 billion in the past decade an increase of 18 per cent.
Additionally, an English housing conditions survey from the Department of Communities and Local Government in 2007 found that almost a million occupied properties across the country are in need of essential repairs.
The figures come as research from the Halifax shows that half of Britons admit to being less handy around the home than their parents were.
People are being advised to hire in tradesmen for jobs requiring technical know-how, something David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, says is "no bad thing".
"Trying to tackle areas you are not qualified for such as gas, electrics or plumbing work can invalidate a home insurance policy," he comments.
