Homeowners fixing up during recession
The recession and the property slump seem to be encouraging more people to stay put and fix up their homes this year.
Some 57 per cent of property owners believed renovating their house would make it a more pleasant place to live, while just under a quarter thought calling in the builders was a good way to add value to their property, according to figures from AA Loans.
A quarter of all homeowners who are planning to have work done on their house this year are considering adding an extension.
Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), emphasises the importance of hiring qualified tradesmen before carrying out any major structural work.
"Make sure they are a bona fide builder and have done that sort of work before," he advised homeowners.
Mr Leech added: "The whole emphasis when you are building an extension is to make it energy efficient, keep the costs down and to help your carbon footprint to reduce."
