Homeowners have grand designs
People are willing to spend more money fixing up their properties now that moving house is less fashionable, according to Grand Designs magazine.
Claire Barrett, editor at the magazine, said people are avoiding a move due to the current housing crisis, meaning they are more likely to hire qualified tradesmen to help add value to their properties instead.
"There is also a focus on properly creating a home for the first time in quite a while, rather than seeing your property as something that is a bit of a cash cow," she added.
Increasing numbers of Brits are also trying to save money by carrying out DIY, according to figures from Sainsbury's Home Insurance, with 11 per cent attempting electrical work in high-risk areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
However, homeowners are being reminded that such work may invalidate their insurance and could also be potentially dangerous.
If in doubt, amateur handymen are advised to consult a qualified professional.
