Smart meters help energy management
Installing a smart meter can help homeowners manage their energy use better, according to uSwitch.com.
Tradesmen could improve a homeowner's energy efficiency by fitting a smart meter to monitor their energy supply, claims the price comparison site's energy expert Will Marples.
Smart meters allow readings to be taken remotely, while the display provides households with real-time energy use readings.
The government expects smart meters to bring an end to energy bills.
Recent research by uSwitch.com indicates that a property with a prepayment energy meter installed spends £107 more per year than the average energy customer paying using direct debit.
There are currently 5.9 million energy customers on prepay meters, who could save money by switching to a smart meter.
Mr Marples suggested that smart meters have already established their benefits despite being a relatively new technology.
He said: "They allow you to manage your usage better and have a real-time view of what you are spending.
"Smart meters also allow you to be that bit more energy efficient."
