Teens in education on the rise
The number of young people aged between 16 and 18 years old who are in education or training has reached 79.7 per cent, figures show.
This figure is even higher for those aged 16 and 17 at 88 per cent, according to data from the Department of Children, Schools and Families.
The number of youngsters aged 16 classed as not in education, employment or training has also reached its lowest level for more than a decade at just 5.2 per cent.
Commenting on the findings, children's secretary Ed Balls claimed that the figures show an increasing number of teenagers are opting to improve their work skills.
He said: "We can clearly see from the figures that young people are choosing to stay in education or training to gain the skills they need to succeed in an increasingly competitive labour market.
"The days of young people only having one chance at getting their qualifications or not having any opportunity to progress are long gone."
According to the Trades Union Congress, unemployment may continue to rise for months after the recession has passed, which is likely to make training and education preferable to many teens.
