UK church modifications urged
Handymen could be put to work on churches and faith buildings throughout the country, under proposals outlined in a new report.
Jointly published by the Church of England and the government, the new report urges faith groups to enhance their facilities.
Ministers hope that the modifications and refurbishments to the faith buildings will enable them to offer more services to local communities.
Culture secretary Andy Burnham said: "This excellent paper brings together two important things - the bricks and mortar of much-loved buildings and the benefits they bring as resources for the wider community.
"Put them together and we are helping these buildings to meet the challenges of the future."
Communities and local government under secretary Sadiq Khan claimed that faith buildings "should be made the most of".
Decisions about how churches are used are made by the Cathedral and Church Buildings Division (CCB) of the Church of England. It also contributed to the report, entitled Church and Faith Buildings: Realising the Potential.
