Women in better position to start business
Many women are in a better position to start their own business than ever before, it has been claimed.
The high numbers of women in skilled jobs compared to the last recession - including in the property and service industries - makes many well-placed to set up on their own, according to Karen Gill, director of everywoman, a resource for business women.
Her comments follow new research by Barclays, which showed that the number of female-only start-ups grew by nine per cent in 2008 to more than 90,000.
Women start-ups also outperformed male counterparts and overtook the national average.
Ms Gill explained that the difference between this recession and the last is that more women are working than ever before and are "as likely" as men to experience redundancy.
She said: "Many are working in the sectors that are the hardest hit, such as retail, property and the service industry.
"As women are more skilled than ever before, starting up their own business is a more viable option."
According to Barclays, the number of new businesses in 2008 rose from 432,300 in 2007 to 436,600.
