If in doubt, hire professionals for home jobs
A leading insurer is advising people considering some DIY over the Easter holiday to leave it to the professionals if they are unfamiliar with the basics.
Esure says the cost of fixing DIY disasters can add up to more than the cost of hiring a handyman to do the work instead.
Common accidents include drilling through water pipes, which adds water damage to the cost of repairs; spilling paint, which can require a replacement carpet and bonfires in gardens getting out of hand.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, says homeowners should consider getting adequate cover to protect themselves against mishaps and hire a plumber, electrician tradesman for the more difficult jobs.
"It can be easy to bite off more than we can chew when it comes to DIY," he comments, adding: "If in doubt, hire in professional help."
Recent figures from Lloyds TSB show British homeowners spent £16.6 billion on fixing up their homes during the decade leading to 2008.
