Carbon emissions targets unrealistic
The government has set unrealistic targets for carbon reduction across the UK's homes, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics).
Expectations that plumbers, electricians and builders will be able to make all homes zero carbon by 2016 is unachievable, the organisation claims.
Rics suggests that a 70 per cent reduction is a more realistic target.
Gillian Charlesworth, director of external affairs at Rics, believes that the government should be setting "cost effective" targets in light of the downturn.
She said: "Resources should be allocated to lower cost measures that will provide maximum insulation to homes.
"This would be a pragmatic solution towards reducing our carbon footprint, given the current recession."
The government launched a consultation in February asking the public for views on reducing the UK's carbon footprint.
Britons from across the country will be invited to a series of events presenting new technologies and providing an opportunity to feedback.
