Plumber and pals lend a hand to landlady
A qualified plumber from Tilehurst has helped a pub landlady's dreams come true after he banded together a group of volunteers to renovate her cash-strapped pub.
Eight amateur handymen followed the lead of pub regular Vasco de Almerida, who had been told by landlady Debbie McGarry that she did not have the money to give the Bird in Hand a much-needed makeover, the Reading Evening Post reports.
The 23-year-old plumber began by offering to sweep up outside but soon went the extra mile by repainting the interior of the pub's games room free of charge.
Mr de Almerida told the paper: "I told her I did not want to charge her and a group of us went and painted the pub.
"When a pub looks nice you feel better and you want to stay there and it also attracts more people."
It follows news that the popular Sunderland pub the Alexandra is in line for a major refurbishment after being bought by Tavistock Leisure.
