Plumber protests against Warm Front scheme
By Brian de Selby
A qualified plumber in Southport has launched a petition to Number 10 in protest at the government's Warm Front scheme.
The initiative aims to make homes warmer and more energy-efficient by providing homeowners with a package of insulation and heating improvements and is managed by energy-efficiency company EAGA.
However, Keith Redmond of K Redmond Plumbing and Heating Services believes the scheme has priced out independent tradesmen by demanding a £25,000 surety, which he says is "unfair competition to small installers".
"The scheme is distorting the market," commented Mr Redmond on his petition, which has over 500 signatories so far.
"Householders are having to wait for installations and given no choice of boiler, while small local firms that offer value for money have no work."
As well as loft and cavity wall insulation, the Warm Front grant also offers draughtproofing, central heating, glass-fronted fires and hot water tank insulation.
