Plumber speaks out on retirement age
The managing director of one of London's most successful plumbing firms has spoken out in favour of government moves which may see the scrapping of the retirement age.
Qualified plumber Charlie Mullins of Pimlico Plumbers said older people should be allowed to continue working as long as they are capable, going as far as to call the mandatory retirement age "nothing short of discrimination".
He commented: "They have a lot of experience and skills to offer, where's the sense in saying to someone who's an asset to your company 'Sorry, you've got to pack it in because you're too old'?"
Over-50s make up one in five workers at Pimlico Plumbers, including 67-year-old Mario Rebellato, whose interest in the firm was piqued when he saw an article describing how 102-year-old Buster Martin was employed to valet vehicles there.
The company recently sponsored the Max Clifford Golf Classic, which helped to raise a record amount of money for the Rhys Daniels Trust.
