Small firms offered role in local decision-making
Small businesses are set to receive more of a voice as part of an agreement forged between the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and local authorities.
Plumbing and electrician firms could have more of a role in the decision-making process at a local level under the new agreement, launched last week.
Local authorities have signed up to 14 Accord Principles that commits them to listen to the views of small businesses, which includes encouraging greater consultation with the local business community.
John Walker, FSB policy chairman, explained that the Accord provides an opportunity for business leaders to "put their support behind businesses".
He said: "During this recession, it's absolutely crucial that local authorities proactively seek the views of small businesses and listen to their needs.
"In every area where a local authority has signed the Accord, small businesses will be able to put their views and concerns directly to decision-makers."
The FSB called for banks to provide local branches with greater decision-making powers earlier this month.
This would allow the decision over whether or not to grant a small business a loan to be made at a local level.
