Technology is no substitute for a good business mind
By Charles Murphy
Qualified plumbers who may be a dab hand with pipework but less so with a Blackberry or iPhone have been told not to worry if they feel they're getting left behind in the digital age.
Charlie Mullins, founder of one of London's most successful plumbing firms, Pimlico Plumbers, has admitted that despite being a self-made millionaire he doesn't own a computer and wouldn't even know how to switch one on.
"The problem with all this new-fangled technology is that you risk losing the personal side of good old fashioned face-to-face management," commented Mr Mullins.
"And to me, a return to a more traditional way of working wouldn't be such a bad thing."
He added that computers are no substitute for a savvy business mind, which is what any self-employed plumber will need if they want to succeed.
The outspoken Mr Mullins recently declared his support for government moves that may see the scrapping of the mandatory retirement age, as his business currently employs a 102-year-old.
