Water meters save money, uSwitch claims
Households have been urged to hire a plumber to install a water meter in their home to reduce the cost of utility bills.
An increase in the average cost of water and sewerage bills by 4.1 per cent came into effect yesterday (April 1st), according to uSwitch.com.
This will increase the average household's water bill from £330 to £343 per year, claims the price comparison site.
But the website suggests that installing a water meter, currently used by only 35 per cent of households, could save up to £125 per year.
Will Marples, home utilities expert at uSwitch.com, explains that heating, water and lighting costs have increased by £29 on average compared to 2008.
He says: "Households don't have much option with water bills - they can't shop around for a better deal.
"If you do switch to a meter and then find it doesn't save you money you can always come back off it again, as long as you do so within a year."
The Environment Agency has urged consumers and businesses to reduce their water usage to help prevent shortages in the future.
