Water pumps are a cost-effective heating solution
Plumbers can save customers money and help the environment by installing a water source heat pump for their house, it has been claimed.
The renewable energy device uses pipes buried under the ground, usually a garden, which extract heat from the earth.
Water from the pipes is then pumped into radiators or underfloor heating systems. It can also be used to preheat water for a conventional boiler.
Helena Wright, renewable energy advisor at environmental advice organisation British Eco Energy, explained that a water pump is also very cost-effective for consumers.
She said: "People do not seem to realise that renewable energy is very economical.
"In the long term it is better to use renewable energy because you won't have to keep extracting fuel."
Research by Friends of the Earth published in April 2008 showed that only two per cent of the UK's energy comes from renewable sources.
