Green loans could help eco-retrofitting
By Brian de Selby
Handymen, plumbers and other tradesmen may soon be called upon to install energy-efficient measures in people's homes after the UK Green Building Council put forward funding proposals for homeowners.
The organisation suggested that low-interest loans of up to £10,000 could be given out to allow people to employ qualified tradesmen to make their homes more efficient, including installing insulation and better heating systems.
Gordon Miller, founder of sustainable development site whatgreenhome.com, said the proposals are "perhaps too bold", although he believes that incentivising people to act on climate change through council tax rebates is a good idea.
"Ultimately, what is being proposed - and it's very unlikely the government will adopt on the specific recommendations - is just one of a series of measures to address the issue of Britain's notoriously energy-inefficient homes," he commented.
A new clean energy cash-back scheme is set to be in place by April next year, which will see householders repaid for generating their own electricity.
