Not enough land for new build homes
By Susie Cho
Builders and tradesmen in the UK are being forced to build smaller homes due to a lack of available land, according to a new report.
The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) has found that more than half (57 per cent) of 2,500 homeowners in new-build properties do not have enough space in their homes.
Over one-third (35 per cent) said there is not enough space in their kitchens for basic cooking appliances like toasters and microwaves.
Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Federation, said builders and qualified tradesmen have to construct homes that people can afford to buy, so the problem will continue until more building land becomes available.
"If there is not enough land and you are demanding bigger room sizes then you are going to get less houses delivered, which is going to drive up the cost, which is going to make it more unaffordable for more people," he commented.
