£280m Sandwell school building deal agreed
By Charles Murphy
Builders and tradesmen in Sandwell have more work coming their way after a consortium led by Interserve secured a major contract to build and maintain schools in the area.
Environments for Learning has been handed a £280 million deal from Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council as part of a ten-year partnership and it is expected that 20 schools will benefit from the scheme.
Construction work will involve both new build and major refurbishment projects, providing jobs for qualified plumbers, electricians and handymen in the area.
Adrian Ringrose, chief executive of Interserve, said the project will make "a huge difference" to local people.
"We know from experience that working in true partnership with a progressive council such as Sandwell will enable us to deliver the kind of learning environments that will transform the education of the children here," he commented.
Interserve was recently named the preferred bidder by HSBC to deliver facilities management services to the bank's property portfolio across the UK.
