Birmingham trades jobs get £14m injection
By Charles Murphy
Tradesmen in Birmingham have been given a boost to their workflow after the city council approved a £14 million investment in regeneration projects.
The funding will be channelled into neighbourhoods in north-west Birmingham including Soho, Newtown, Aston, Lozells and Birchfield.
Under the banner of the Urban Living Pathfinder programme, the Homes and Community Agency funding aims to drive forward a programme of housing, social and environmental regeneration which will provide more jobs for qualified tradespeople.
One project which has already got underway is the redevelopment of the Crocodile Works factory in Newtown, which will provide 168 new family homes.
Peter Latchford, chairman of the Urban Living programme, commented: "Ultimately, we are there to support local people in continuing to make their neighbourhoods stronger, safer and more attractive."
Birmingham City Council is currently awaiting funding approval on its ambitious plans to completely redevelop its administrative office estate, something which will bring even more construction and trades jobs to the city.
