Chapel refurbishment carried out in Manchester
By Brian de Selby
Builders and tradesmen in Manchester have been hard at work giving a Grade II listed building a much-needed makeover.
The North Chapel at Southern Cemetery was built in 1879 and has been restored to its former glory by building firm Harry Fairclough Construction.
Due to the building's status, the work was required to meet specific standards and use specialist construction methods in order to preserve its original appearance.
Repairs were made to the stonework and roof, new guttering and drainage systems were installed, plastering and redecorating was carried out and qualified electricians gave the building's wiring an upgrade.
"The refurbishment of this historic building is evidence that we are continually striving to improve the quality of the buildings and facilities available within the city's cemeteries whilst at the same time protecting our heritage," commented councillor Mike Amesbury.
Manchester's tradesmen recently received a boost from news that local housing schemes in the city have been earmarked for a share of the £25 million grant from the Homes and Communities Agency.
