Construction figures up in July
By Brian de Selby
There is good news for those in the trades and construction industry after the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) posted an optimistic outlook for the sector in July.
Although the increase in activity is modest, the CIPS index figure of 47 for last month represents the slowest rate of contraction for sixteen months.
Suppliers have been able to improve on delivery times, according to the research, while increased competition meant buyers in the industry were able to secure more favourable prices.
However, there were slight falls in the level of new orders and job losses continue to affect the sector.
David Noble, chief executive officer of CIPS, said a perceived improvement in the wider economy is bringing optimism back to those in construction and trades jobs.
"Whilst the current situation still looks very bleak, an upturn looks much closer than it did just a few months ago," he commented.
Meanwhile, Britain's manufacturing sector recorded its first month of growth since March 2008, according to CIPS figures.
