Energy-efficiency should be compulsory
By Brian de Selby
Tradesmen may be required to install cavity wall insulation, solar panels and other energy-saving measures in homes around the UK after one organisation suggested that it should not be possible to sell or rent an inefficient home.
The Energy Saving Trust said that since October, all properties on the market have been required to produce an Energy Performance Certificate which rates its efficiency from A to G.
A spokesperson for the Trust said that the organisation is advising the government that it should not be possible to sell or rent a home that is F or G rated from 2015, meaning tradesmen may soon be called upon to provide upgrades.
"Our proposals are only that regulation should come into force only in seven years time," she commented.
"And we believe grants, financing packages and advice should make it possible for everyone who wants to act to do so in the next few years."
