Enterprise Allowance Scheme would help those made redundant
A business pressure group is urging the government to re-introduce the Enterprise Allowance Scheme to help out those who have been made redundant.
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) was responding to the government's incentive to aid the long-term unemployed by offering a 'golden hello' of £1,000 to employers taking on those who have been seeking work for more than six months.
Work and pensions secretary James Purnell said businesses can take advantage of an additional £1,500 for in-work training to give their employees the skills they need.
However, a spokesperson for the FSB warned that due to restrictions in accessing the funds, the scheme is more likely to be used by larger businesses rather than small, local employers.
She said the FSB is calling for April's budget to include the re-instatement of the Enterprise Allowance Scheme, "a weekly benefit to help those who have been made redundant become self-employed".
Figures show that 29.38 million people were in employment during the three months to January 2009.
