Green investment will create trades jobs
By Susie Cho
Government investment in green technology could open up thousands of new jobs for plumbers, electricians and other qualified tradesmen, according to the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
Over one-third of those working in climate change in the country are not UK citizens, a study by recruitment company Acre Resources has found.
Some 17 per cent were EEA or Swiss nationals, while a further 20 per cent came from countries outside Europe.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, said the UK is "lagging behind" while many of our neighbours on the continent are embracing green technology and urged the government to take advantage of the country's skilled workers.
"By investing heavily and regulating in favour of green technology, the government can turn the UK into a world leader and create over a million skilled jobs," he added.
The government's UK Low Carbon Transition Plan aims to have more than 1.2 million people in green jobs by 2020.
