Green report predicts 50,000 construction jobs
More than 50,000 jobs could be directly created if the government decided to commit to an energy efficiency programme, according to a new joint report.
The Trades Union Congress, Federation of Master Builders (FMB), the Liberal Democrats and Greenpeace have all given their backing to the report, which calls for £5 billion investment in domestic energy efficiency programmes.
Such a programme would also create hundreds of thousands of jobs indirectly - further boosting opportunities for tradesmen and handymen throughout the UK.
The measures would also have the potential to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 1.6 million tonnes per year.
Leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg explained that environmental protection offers "the best route to economic recovery".
He said: "Action taken now to insulate schools, hospitals and homes would create thousands of jobs, protect the environment and help families.
"The extra money we borrow during the recession to stimulate the economy must be invested in projects that create jobs and build green infrastructure."
Meanwhile, the FMB has called on the Treasury to introduce further fiscal incentives to refurbish the existing housing stock.
