Kier wins £2.7m refurb contract at Northumbria Uni
By Susie Cho
Tradesmen in Newcastle have more work coming their way after a building contractor was awarded a £2.7 million deal to refurbish part of the city's Northumbria University.
Three phases of construction work have been awarded to Kier North East in a project that will transform lecture theatres and laboratories in the Ellison Building.
Work began on the site last week to refurbish the first, third and fifth floors of the building in preparation for the 14-week second phase, while the final phase is planned to begin in summer next year.
Neil Hosie, project manager for Kier North East, said local tradesmen stand to benefit from the project.
"Kier North East is delighted to be involved with this project to enhance the school of science at Northumbria University and is pleased to be using predominantly local subcontractors to complete the works," he added.
The contractor recently joined with the Durham and Darlington Education Business Partnership education programme, which aims to highlight career opportunities in construction and the trades to young people.
