Ormskirk Station opens after £1.8m refurb
By Charles Murphy
Tradesmen in Lancashire have helped to deliver a major refurbishment and eco-retrofit of a Grade II Listed railway station.
Ormskirk Station, which is managed by Merseyrail, was given a complete overhaul in a project led by Lancashire County Council and involving the Railway Heritage Trust and the Department for Transport.
While tradesmen were careful to keep the structure as close as possible to its original architecture, the station now earns green credentials with a rainwater-harvesting system, energy-saving LED lighting, better insulation and improved underfloor heating.
The £1.8 million refurbishment also included a new booking hall and waiting room, improved parking facilities and an enhanced CCTV system.
"The Trust is particularly pleased that 21st century eco-friendly design techniques have been embraced within the refurbishment whilst retaining the 19th century built architecture," commented Jim Cornell, executive director of the Railway Heritage Trust.
Elsewhere in Lancashire, Euxton Library recently reopened after tradesmen helped to deliver a £430,000 revamp to modernise facilities there.
