Recession may be past the worst
By Susie Cho
Small businesses, such as self-employed plumbers and electricians, are being told that the UK may be past the worst of the recession by a leading professional services company.
John Hawksworth, head of macroeconomics at PricewaterhouseCoopers, said that while private sector employment is still in decline, the decline is far less steep than it used to be - something he described as "reasonably encouraging".
However, Mr Hawksworth continued to say that the public sector is facing tight restraints on spending, leading to fears that the private sector recession may in time become a public sector recession.
"The next government is going to be putting in place a very tight spending plan," he added.
"It does mean that the pace of recovery in the medium term will probably be a bit slower."
The CIPS/Markit Purchasing Managers' Index for the service industry in July saw services activity, such as hiring professional electricians and handymen, grow at its fastest rate in July since February 2008.
