Refurbishment work begins on Bolton Town Hall
By Brian de Selby
Tradesmen and handymen in Bolton have begun work on an 11-month programme of window refurbishments to the historic Town Hall.
The Grade II listed building is being repaired as part of Bolton Council's maintenance programme and will ensure that the heritage building is preserved for future generations.
Upgrades to the windows will also improve the Town Hall's thermal efficiency, helping the council to meet its carbon management commitments.
As well as the internal and external refurbishment of the building's windows, all external stone will be thoroughly cleaned and repaired in a programme of works that is expected to last until Jun 2010, providing work for tradesmen in the town.
"Although the scaffolding will temporarily affect the appearance of the Town Hall, it will be worthwhile disruption, which will enable us to preserve this historic building for future generations to enjoy," commented council leader Cliff Morris.
The building was opened in 1873 and almost doubled in size during the 1930s, when additional office space was added to it.
